We all pet dogs…so what is the difference between petting a dog
and canine massage therapy?
Canine massage is classified as a holistic form of therapy, whereby specific and focused touching is
used to relax, calm and soothe the dog’s body. Different techniques such as the type of stroke used,
the speed, direction and amount of pressure applied, specifically helps to improve and support the
overall well being of the dog.
Canine Massage Therapy & Kinesiology Taping
Canine Conditions That Can Benefit From Massage Therapy
Fast growing, large breeds (i.e. Great Danes, Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundland, etc.)
that are more prone to injury
Muscle atrophy (Due to a degenerative condition or decline in activity)
Post surgical/injury recovery
Soft tissue injuries
Arthritis and degenerative joint conditions
Anxiety/depression
Therapeutic Benefits of Massage Therapy
Helps to maintain and improve their emotional health
(Similar to humans, dogs are aware of their declining abilities as they age)
Helps to relax dogs that are over stimulated by the world around them, creates trust
Stimulates, strengthens and tones inactive muscles
Reduces pain and inflammation
Increases range of motion and flexibility
Speeds up the healing process by way of increased circulation and oxygenation of muscles
Improves respiratory and lymph function
Helps to prevent injury: prepares a dog for activity by properly warming up muscles or cooling
them down post activity
*The therapeutic services offered by Pawtherapy K9 Aquatic & Massage Centre are never
in place of veterinary medicine and only act as cooperative/complimentary modalities to the
treatment plan, outlined by your veterinarian. As such, a veterinary assessment and
referral must be completed and submitted, before we can assist in the care of your dog.*
What is K9 Kinesiology Taping?
Kinesiology Taping is a therapeutic taping technique used both in humans and animals, to aid in the
movement of the body, provide stability to muscles and joints, improve movement patterns and reduce
pain. Kinesiology tape differs from conventional bandaging tape, in that it stretches along the
longitudinal axis allowing it to provide support during exercise without restricting motion. Kinesiology
taping sessions are for dogs that may require an additional therapeutic aid. These taping techniques
can be used on their own or as an additional aid to the hydrotherapy and massage recovery plans.
Canine Conditions That Can Benefit From Kinesiology Tape
Dogs experiencing neck/back/shoulder pain, hind end weakness
or leg pain
Disc bulges
Lymphedema/post surgical swelling, contusions
Proprioception issues due to degenerative conditions
Agility or working dogs that are more prone to injury due to the
strain on their muscles and joints
Therapeutic Benefits of Kinesiology Tape
Decrease in pain
Increased muscle strength
Improved blood and lymph circulation
Can assist with joint stability
Stimulates proper proprioception and in turn promotes proper movement
